What other people think of what we do
There’s a website called 43 Things. It’s a touchy-feely, new-agey kinda site where people dream up things they want to do. And other people, who have done those things, tell the others how they did it, and how/why they should “go for it.”
You can peruse long lists of other peoples’ desires and aspirations. It’s exhibitionist, it’s voyeuristic, it’s therapeutic (for some, we suppose) and it’s gotten a lot of attention from the MSM.
You can see which cities take advantage of it most often. You can delve into categories (like learning, travel, love, etc.) and you can search through all the hopes and dreams using a search function. (And, of course, you can sign up and throw your own thing into the mix.)
Of course, being the editors and publishers of an online blog-azine about standup, we punched “comedy” into the search function and got interesting results.
It is enlightening to surf around and through all the results regarding standup– to read the thoughts and musings and fears of people who want to try standup. And it’s fascinating to read some of the things other people tell the hopeful ones. (Although, we would like to tell the aspirants that it is never okay to “do other people’s jokes, just to see what it’s like!”)
