Never let 'em see you sweat?
“A tough time for comics with Obama as president?” is the question posed in the title of an AP article (another one!) by Frazier Moore. This one has quotes from the Leno, Ferguson, Maher and DL Hughley.
Only Hughley echoes our sentiments:
If you call yourself a comic, you can’t excuse the most powerful man in the world… He is the most powerful man on the face of the planet. He is The Man!
An entertainment writer from the Philadelphia Daily News called SHECKYmagazine last week, seeking quotes for a similar story. Our basic theme was that all this hand-wringing and fretting was unseemly and a violation of the unwritten law, popularized by Elayne Boosler in, of all places, a deodorant commercial from a few years back– “Never let ’em see you sweat.” We may be disinclined to joke about this or that, but we should never even consider letting the public know that we might actually be incapable of doing so.

Two things:1.) The article was written by Frazier Moore, not Frazier Smith. 2.) Hughley is the only one who echoes your sentiments? I’m still looking for someone who is the opposite of your sentiments! Not one comedian in that article said they were going to let Obama off the hook. Not one of them suggested they were “incapable.” They all just repeated that he was “not an easy target” and, because of that, “it would be a challenge.” I still don’t know ONE comedian, I have yet to read about ONE comedian, who plans to exclude Obama from jokes or jabs. You have yet to give any examples of someone who plans to do so but, you keep suggesting that it’s true. All of your examples continually just show people saying, “[It’ll be tough],” or, at least, “[It’ll be tougher than previous administrations.]”Sincerely,Ryan Stouthttp://www.ryanstout.nethttp://www.myspace.com/ryanstout
Comics are saying that it will be hard. Some have been saying that it is impossible. We’re of the opinion that merely saying that it will be hard is embarrassing. Thus the title. We’re comedians. We’re supposed to say, “Yes. We look forward to the new administration. It will be our pleasure to skewer the new resident of the White House.” All this moping around and hand-wringing is unseemly. It reflects poorly on our profession. And we don’t buy that it will be hard. (Or that is should be.)Have you ever heard a magician say, “I don’t know… it would be really hard to make an oceanliner disappear… gosh… I don’t think so.” No. They say, “Meet me here on this spot in exactly three fortnights and I shall dazzle you with the most amazing feat of legerdemain your eyes have ever seen!” (And then they go and figure out how to make an oceanliner disappear.) It’s simple P.R. That a bunch of comedians who’ve been contacted by major news outlets have succumbed to this mopey, gloomy pessimism is pathetic. As for the Frazier Moore/Frazier Smith confusion– We saw the byline and immediately were reminded of < HREF="http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=52036590" REL="nofollow">Frazier Smith<>, the radio personality and actor whom we recall fondly as the regular emcee at the Ice House in Pasadena from our days in California!!Thanks for pointing the error out, we shall go and correct it now!
