More opinion on Guy Earle’s “trial”
This time from Mark Steyn, himself a target of the “human rights” regime.
There is a word for a judge who tries and convicts a man without testimony or representation or a jury of his peers. I mean, aside from words like “dick”, “ass” and “cunt”, all of which one might apply to “Judge” Geiger-Adams. That word is sham. As with any show trial in any nickel-and-dime banana-republic presidency-for-life, the outward forms of “justice” are deployed for a precise inversion of it. That’s wretched enough when it happens in North Korea or the Soviet Union. When a jurisdiction that’s heir to one of the oldest sustained legal inheritances on the planet decides to dump due process, it’s even more shameful.
We couldn’t agree with him more.
To be sure, Steyn makes a few wince-inducing comments (generalities, really) about standup comics and standup in general, but we can understand how it might appear to Steyn that the vast majority of the comedy community is against Guy Earle (and, by extension, tacitly supporting the BCHRC’s “assault on one of the most basic principles of justice”). We, too, were appalled at the lack of support or the tepid– and ultimately worthless– support Earle did receive. And we were gratified when a handful came out and offered a strong and eloquent defense for Earle (and condemnation of the BCHRC) in our comments. (And we were also pleased to see blogger/author/radio host Kathy Shaidle weigh in after linking to us.)
It’s worth it to read the entire essay.

Hi again guys! Glad you linked to Steyn’s piece. Like me, he is livid about this.
We wish more people were, but a lot of the shrugging has to do with folks not really understanding what’s at stake. Of course, some of their anti-Earle commentary is based on naked self-protection. They think that if they side with the State, they’ll be spared when the time comes.
It doesn’t work that way.
Thanks for the shout out — and more importantly, for staying on the case.
Just one thing: I’m a talk radio nerd, but not a host 🙂 I’d be gawdawful!
Completely outraged at this mockery of a mockery, a travesty of a sham (to paraphrase a comic of a bygone era).
Googling “Guy Earle” brought me to the Hollywood Reporter, on which site various posters “offended” by “homophobia” etc rationalize jackbooted morons deciding how much to “balance” (i.e. prohibit) a supposedly free citizen’s right to think and speak against the vague possibility that someone might be “offended.” And this is in the US, at least nominally.
It makes me ruminate on not only how most under-thirties have no knowledge or appreciation for Constitutional values, but how utterly cut off are same citizens from the Western core values and history of ideas that brought forth such a thing as a Bill of Rights. I genuinely fear that if we don’t soon return to teaching real history and civics in public education, that we may be about finished as a civilization a generation or so from now.
Here it is and I am not afraid to put it out there…
You get what you asked for.
The education system is inundated w/ ultra liberal types that in their own warped sense are no better than the nuts on the extreme right. And the curriculum and messages they teach are sometimes scary if you really look at it. There is supposed to be a separation of church & state yet my nephew was sent home songs & drawings about Hanukah, Kwaanza and Ramadan. Nothing about Christmas or Santa. When I asked about this and brought up seperation of church & state, they said it had nothing to do about religion, it was cultural enlightenment. Also he was suspended for “sexual harassment” He was in the 2nd grade. What did he do? He told a classmate who was hanging upside down in a skirt on the monkey bars that he could see her underwear and also told his friends. This made her embarrassed and she cried. The teacher felt that it was sexual harassment and now he has that on his permanent record.
You cannot legislate fairness or social equality. I mean you can but it isn’t genuine. You have people acting in a certain way outta fear of punishment rather than because they genuinely like or respect that person regardless of color, sexul orientation or cultural background.
The truth is and I speak from personally interviewing Guy Earle. He is a vulgar and unapologetic arse. That being said, anything did while on stage, w/ the exception of physical violence should be protected speech. Anything he did while off stage is a personal matter not pertaining to comedy specifically. Also the women physically assaulted him first. Did he counter sue. I think he did. Not sure. He should have never grabbed the glasses off her head.
I do not condone attacking an audience on a personal level but that should be left to ownership of club or bookers. I run a show in an Irish bar. We have a policy. If the audience is being a cunt, feel free to go after them but, do not attack them for being Irish. It’s their bar and their home away from home. If they make it personal in a heckle then that’s different but still opt for the high road.
Now even though I am all for saying anything on stage or being offensive for offensives sake, it up to the owners & bookers to set the limits & boundaries.
It should not be up to peerless kangaroo court that cares more about political correctness than actual fair and just trials.
