Still time to submit tapes to Houston Fest
Stephan Rubin, of the Houston Comedy Festival, tells us there is still time to submit tapes to the Houston Comedy Festival– up until March 4th, we’re told. See earlier posting for the website… and see the website for address/details, etc!

Is a $25 submission/entry fee reasonable, or is this simply an excuse to make money for watching our five minute tapes in order to pay for the rest of whatever they do?
To answer your questions: Yes.
To put it another way:
The $25 submission/entry fee is a way for the festival to make money to pay for the rest of whatever they do.
If you weigh the possible benefits and decide to send in a check and a tape, then it is, by your standards, “reasonable.”
If you decide, after careful consideration, that it may not be beneficial enough, then $25 is not “reasonable.”
We make no judgements about entry fees or submission fees– either for festivals or contests. We just sling word of the opportunity up there and allow you to make the call.
Before cutting any checks, however, we suggest you ask around and see if anyone else found it to be worth it or a waste of time.
Some festivals have budgets– either from sponsors of government grants or from private or personal venture capital. They don’t charge. Other festivals have slim budgets or no budget at all. They opt to use submission or “tape review” fees as a source of operating capital. It’s up to each comic to decide whether particpation in the individual fest is worth their time and money.

Many people might not be aware of this, but I just checked out the qualifications for the contest and it said (on their website):
“QUALIFICATION. The Comedy Club Competition is open to any and all U.S. residents, 18 and older, domiciled or primarily based in Texas, who is an amateur or professional standup comedian.” Unfortunately, it seems to be open only to Texans….
