Mitch Hedberg, March 30, 2005
(Update 12:23 PM EST) We have confirmed through two reputable sources that Mitch Hedberg died yesterday, March 30, 2005. A statement will be issued shortly by his representatives.
We are sad to report that Mitch Hedberg is dead.
We’ve referred to Mitch as one of the few “rock stars” of comedy. We saw him perform at a gala at Just For Laughs in 2001 and it was astonishing to see the reaction of the crowd in the theater that night. Radically different from any other response.
From our Sunday, July 22, 2001, J.F.L. update:
The highlight, though, was seeing Hedberg live. It was like seeing a rock star. The response was tremendous and he was forced to step on the laughter to get all the material in. It was frenzied. To top it all off, he’s a nice guy.
We never did get to see him do an extended set. Our schedules never worked out. We made a half-assed attempt to get one of us (the male half) on the bill when he and Stephen Lynch came to Philly to perform at the Tower Theater late last year, but it never worked out.
We met him in Montreal, just after his gala performance. He was gentle, quick to laugh, seemingly shy– a lot like his onstage persona.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Mitch early on in the magazine’s history (1999?) and that interview put us on the map. For that, we’ll always be grateful.
Shortly after it ran, we recieved an email from Mitch’s mother, requesting a hard copy. We printed it out as best we could and sent it along with a note saying how nice her son was. She was very proud of him and she liked to collect all of his clippings.
To this day, it is one of our most-hit files. We declared, to anyone who would listen, that, more than any comedian who was out there working, Mitch Hedberg inspired an internet buzz, a fan reaction, a loyalty like no other. His fans, owing to their average age or sensibilities perhaps, made him the first comedian to become a WWW star as well as a television and live performance star. We could tell that he was appearing somewhere when the number of hits on that file spiked.
He was one of our favorites here. Our hearts go out to his friends, his family and his loved ones.
This better be an early April Fools joke.
No, its not a joke. He was found dead in his hotel room last night. It has been confirmed. Howard Stern Show has been talking about it all morning as he was just there a few days ago. Very sad.
Do you have a link for any info on this horrific situation?
It’s no joke. I’m at a loss for words. Two nights ago my friends and I had a Mitch-a-thon in Pennsauken. We were all siked to go see him again this year. We’ve lost a very unique perspective of the world. -Shakir Ali
Please, no jokes at this time.We apologize for our less mature readers. Note to parents: Try to keep a handle on your child’s internet use. This is no time for levity.
Why is there no news story anywhere about this? If it happened last night, some journalist somewhere would’ve already written a story on it and it would be online. This has to be a joke. (I realize that Howard Stern is talking about it, but come on. This is the same guy who thought his own dead baby’s corpse was a funny joke.)

Do we have any sort of confermation that this is actually true? Some places say yes, some say no. His Baltimore show tonight hasn’t been cancelled yet, and the club in Baltimore has no confermation either. I have heard he was sick the last 3 day’s. I hope to god if this is true that he isn’t another genius to lose their life due to drug addiction. If this is true all I can say is god bless Mitch, you will be missed. 🙁
What was the dead baby joke???Also i am hearing it from too many dif sources now (shecky, stern, lettermans research people) to believe its a joke. 🙁 i will miss him but hopefully it will be a wakeup call to any other jackass using drugs.
“hopefully it will be a wakeup call to any other jackass using drugs.”Let’s confirm the cause of death before assuming he OD’d.
Hedberg’s website says is was updated this morning, and there’s nothing on there about him dying. There’s nothing on Google news, either. I don’t know what to believe.

If this be the case and if it be from overdose…what a horrific waste of genius..How many others ? What’s it going to take ? Belushi…Farley…the countless numbers in paupers graves ? go on Mitch..take your place amoungst the masses

I’m stunned… This is such a shame. He was a gifted writer with a unique presence. Life is a more fragile gift than we choose to accept. Let the ones in your life know you love them… it’s never too soon.– Glen C.
Someone just sent me this…Mitch Hedberg death rumor travels around worldMarch 31st, 2005 Posted: 8:23 AM EDT (1223 GMT)NEW YORK, New York (CNN) — A radio station joked that “rock star comic” Mitch Hedberg died of a drug overdose Wednesday night, setting off an international flurry of rumors. Popular shock jock Howard Stern said Hedberg, 37, died last night at his hotel. Internet blog sites began flooding with expressions of shock and remorse from people who had heard the rock radio station joking around that Hedberg had died. However, Hedberg is scheduled to perform at The Improv Thursday night in Baltimore, MD. Police in Baltimore and New York had not heard any reports of such an incident. The rumor, most likely fueled by the Internet and e-mails, traveled overseas to Moscow, where CNN’s bureau there — and many television stations in Australia — called CNN’s Atlanta headquarters to find out if the reports were accurate.http://edition.cnn.com/2001/SHOWBIZ/Comedy/03/31/hedberg.rumor/
That CNN link does not exist. Find out where that came from!
uhh, someone just call the comedy club to see if the show’s still on. it’s march 31, people. think aboutttt it.
I work for a comedy club in VA where Mitch no-showed on his entire gig last week. We were all miffed about it. Arriving at work this morning, I was completely mortified to learn that Mitch had passed late last night. We got the word at 2AM. I am so sorry.
not buyin itThis is a big load of cr@p
Its official. In talking with Mitch’s booking agent, he confirmed Mitch did pass away. Its not in the Baltimore papers because he passed in NJ not Maryland. God Bless and my heart goes out to his widow and family.
Apparently the booking agent doesn’t do un-booking very well then.
I called the Baltimore Improve. While everything right now is still officially just a rumor they said they’re are releasing a statement a 2:00 this afternoon. And for the record I typed out the phonetic spelling of “sike” as per my P-Town colloquialism. Besides the other way has way to many letters.
Just read about Mitch…fuck. I saw him perform this past year in Montreal at Club Soda. I did my set and then sat in the green room with everyone else and watched him up on a monitor as he performed on stage. The timing, the craft, the gift he had; we sat and listened and took it in. The laughter from the crowd spilled through the door of the green room. I remember saying, “Boys, this is the closest we’ll ever get to seeing Bird.” It hurts that our business lost such an amazing comic. Just like Charlie Parker– gone way to soon… fuck.Joe Starr

It’s on the comedy central website
I called the Improv in Baltimore and they said all of his shows were cancelled and full refunds were being given out. The person on the phone said that it was true that he had passed away. I was supposed to see him in Richmond last week and he wasnt there for the shows due to being sick. Serious bum out. One Love Mitch!
I purchased tickets for Saturday in Baltimore – the Improv indicated they will be refunding. He makes me laugh out loud, like few other comedians can. He will be missed.(Jeff Q., Odenton, MD)

Horrible news. Mitch was a great comedic mind and he will be missed. Condolences to his family and friends.
Anyone know what his favorite drink was?
I also work at a comedy club in Va. It is true. Lots of places will be reporting it on Friday, but today it got overshadowed with the whole Terri Schaivo case. It is absolutely true and very tragic. It is so sad to look at his old headshots and see a happy face trying to camouflage tormented eyes. Anyone who’s seen him recently(or had tix to see his shows which ended up being cancelled) knows he’s been on a slippery slope. I cannot imagine the grief his mother, wife and sister are going through right now and will be dealing with from now on. Death from drugs is like death from suicide…it is a cold, desperate attempt at escapism. Please think before you act. The people you leave behind are forever changed, and all life is priceless. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones. How many more have to die? Take care of the ones you love.
I still haven’t seen any published stories with the details of Mitch’s untimely death. He was one funny dude and I’ll definitely miss him.
His website is back up now. http://www.mitchhedberg.net
Beluchi, Candy, Farley, Hicks, and now Mitch Hedberg. 🙁 When will the needless deaths cease!?!
Unfortunately it’s not a joke. Mitch’s death is truly a tragedy. He had a real gift for comedy. Sincerest condolences to his wife and family.

Deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends. He was by far my favorite comedian, and he seemed like a really nice guy, too. The world of comedy is in deep mourning right now.Keep them laughing up there, Mitch, and reserve me a room at The QuadrupleTree.R.I.P.
I met Mitch and his wife Lynn at the Tampa Improv about 3 yrs ago. My friend Roy is the MC for the Improv so he knew Mitch personally. Its so sad to hear that such an interesting, talented person is gone. He will be missed. His show was still one of, if not the best, stand up routine I have ever seen. So original. He was unlike an comedian I have ever seen. First Hunter now Mitch. What’s going on? This world needs more people like them. This year is really getting off to a shitty start.
It is a cryin shame that he had to go out like this and so soon. it brakes my heart to see such a great mind fall to the power of drugs.
I’m also way sad to hear the news about Mitch Hedberg…I too saw him perform live back in 2003 in South Florida & he was hilarious beyond words! My sister & I had tears coming out of our eyes the entire time…we were laughing so hard! I feel sorry for the people who weren’t fans & never “got it”…because it was truly something worth “getting”! I was definitely a huge fan & would frequent his website often to see what his tour dates were, or just to look around, etc. We love you Mitch & we wish you were still here!!! =0(
We saw him with Stephen Lynch at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco in…, was it September? I thought he was fabulous. Bright, intelligent &, of course, funny. We have lost a genius.
When I talked to Mitch after a show and asked him what he wanted to drink a few years ago in Massachusetts, his request was a bottle of Ketel One vodka. Whether or not that was his favorite, I don’t know.
Genius? no. Funny guy? yes. I think Mitch would agree, let’s not get too carried away here.
It’s in fact very true. Comedy Central just played his special and at the end had his date of birth and death. It was a clip of Mitch saying “I love you guys” and under the dates they wrote “We loved you, too.” So tragic. He will forever be one of my favorite comedians.
