Tech question: Free audio file hosting?
Does anyone know of any sites that host audio files for free? (And don’t arbitrarily take those files down at an unspecified time, without telling the person who uploaded the file, thereby leaving the person who uploaded the file without the ability to provide clients with an audio clip?)
We had a couple audio files on our Electronic Press Kit (convenient for radio stations who want to promote our upcoming engagements), but the goofballs at (Website we’d rather not give any publicity to) took them down sometime in the past few weeks/months and didn’t bother to tell us!
We Googled “free audio file hosting,” and got the creepiest, sorriest bunch of broken links and busted ventures we’ve ever seen.
Does anyone out there host audio files for free and do so reliably? All we need is a site that offers to let us park our (relatively small) audio files on their site and link to them so that folks who visit our site can download the files to use in a radio broadcast, radio commercial or whatever.
We’d appreciate any assistance on this. Thanks in advance.

If you just need them hosted so radio stations can download them, then you can host them on your own site like any other file. If you are looking for a site to provide streaming and a player, I use reverbnation.com It’s a music site, but doesnt matter.
Ricardo is correct about hosting them on your own server.I started using switchpod.com to toss up episodes of my radio show, because they had an embeddable player that I could just stick on my site. Then I switched to directly linking to the files (like what you’re doing for yours). And now I’ve found a player I like better than switchpod’s (odeo), so I use that and still host the files on switchpod. That was a long way of saying that you can host mp3s wherever you want.
Free is always sketchy, but if you can find $5 a month in your budget, i suggest libsyn.com. It’s the site I use for my podcasts, and it has a ton of awesome tracking and stats tools.
If you just need stations to download files (whatever they may be), which they then play themselves on their own equipment, then your own server is fine. But if you want a player that displays on a website and allows them to both play and download then you should go with one of the sites we’re suggesting. I’ve been using ReverbNation for a few years.http://www.reverbnation.com/ricardoalemanYou can specify a playlist order or random, have it autoplay on your website or myspace page http://www.myspace.com/ricardoaleman < - auto plays when you visit>You can also specify that clips can be played only and not downloaded if you wish.I run dailycomedy.com and we support audio as well. We’re not as fancy as reverbnation. But it’s embedible, with one click share to mypace or facebook. It’s not a widely used feature yet, but it works great and we’re a comedy site, and unlike everyone else on the comedy website block… we’re not going out of business.http://www.dailycomedy.com/jokes/mp3
Thanks for all the advice so far…
The files we’re talking about here are only 2.1 MB and 3.5 MB… so far… and we only plan on offering a couple more… maybe a total of 10 MB.
We want folks to be able to download them onto their HD and use them on the air.
Do these embedded players allow that?
(Normally, we’d do this research ourselves, but there seems to be great confusion out there– and a mysterious lack of ability on the part of the websites to explain exactly what they do/do not offer. So, there’s nothing like experience in this case.)
Do these embedded players allow that?
Yes. I used to just provide a direct link to the switchpod file, so if they clicked on it they could either listen to it directly or download it.
If you’re looking for another site like mediafire… well, mediafire is the best of the bunch, and if you had an account with them I thought they wouldn’t kill your files. Live and learn. Alternate would be something like sendspace. But honestly? I think those sites just create an extra step that you don’t really need for files that small.
If you just want people to download the files, then I’d also recommend mediafire. There are tons of online storage sites but they’re pretty well-known and have a well-designed site.
I to have my audio files on reverbnation.com as well at http://www.reverbnation.com/geoffdening
Besides the great access of the hosting site with audio player widgets available for most website applications there is also the added facility of getting your recordings on most major retail download sites for a minimal fee. PLUS monthly royalty payements.
