Last Comic Standing Finale

by Brian McKim & Traci Skene on August 10th, 2006

We posted the winner 3 hours and 19 minutes a head of time! (See below… Josh Blue won. It pays to check this blog regularly! Thanks to our secret tipster!)

How about that Anthony Clark? Pretty funny how he said, “This was one of the best seasons ever…” then quickly corrected himself to say, “This was the best season ever!”

We’ve been hard on the man. He’s proven himself over and over again on television and in live performances to be a professional standup comic… indeed, it’s what has enabled him to achieve fame and fortune and star in two sitcoms. What is going on now, though?

The poor hosting abilities of Clark was never so evident as when Jay Mohr returned for tonight’s finale, inviting a comparison of the two. We mocked Mohr in Season II, but we appreciate him now.

In a startling display of grovelling, LCS producer Peter Engel came out and brought Mohr on for his standup set. We’ve read that Mohr was angry with NBC over Season III:

His falling out with NBC came over the third edition of Last Comic, which was rushed onto the network’s fall 2004 schedule after LCS 2 earned solid ratings that summer. The battle between contestants from seasons one and two fell flat in the more competitive environment of the fall season, and NBC canceled it a week before the winner was to be revealed.

The dapper Mohr was all smiles and confidence tonight, though– could he be signalling a return to hosting duties? We can only hope. (Did we just say that? I guess we did!)

We spotted the following among our statistics:

Never a good thing for the franchise when folks in the Carolinas are asking Google if your show is fixed. (Of course, we helped that rumor get some traction early on in the proceedings. But, NBC helped out big time with their hokey internet contest. Speaking of which, Theo Von came out, waved, burbled his thanks, turned and departed.) We’ll say this: If it was fixed, they’d better fix it some more!

We like to give special thanks to all of our SHECKYmagazine spies out there! At least it made it interesting to know what was going to happen before it happened! (And we daresay our readers got a tingle out of knowing the TV future!)

We’ll be keeping a close eye on Season V, you can bet on it!
