The return of Brother Theodore
When we posted about Brother Theodore on this site a couple of years ago, we recall thinking that his life would make a tremendous movie.
Apparently some folks in Los Angeles think his life would make a great live theater piece. Robert Trebor, who was a recurring character on the Xena and Hercules TV shows, will be appearing at the Skylight Theater on Vermont, every Saturday at 10 PM through April 14, as the rambling monologist in “The Return of Brother Theodore.” Admission in a mere $15

A MERE $15? I think it was $5 to see the actual Brother Theodore perform.I was sad to hear of his death several years ago– I tried to find recordings of his rantings, but apparently nobody ever recorded them to make them available for sale. At least I have the memories of having seen him a few times. A friend of mine grew up knowing him from a NYC chess club– said he always dressed in black, and nobody seemed to know his last name.
It was $5 to see him when movies were $2.50. By that measure the admission should be $50 not $15. Seriously I saw Trebor do the show and he’s hilarious, and doing a damn good job of “reincarnating Theodore” as the LA Weekly said. I saw Theodore in Greenwich Village several times in the 80’s, and Trebor is definitely in the ballpark as far as material and delivery go. If you’re in Los Angeles and have a hankering to see some of the routines he did on Letterman or Merv Griffen you should absolutely check out this show! And take a girlfriend; he singles people out of the audience just like Theodore did in New York
Your math is off– if the show were $5 when movies were $2.50, then it should be $20 now that movies are $10. Not $50.But 15 years ago movies in NYC weren’t $2.50, they were $6 or $7.And anyway, Beatlemania shouldn’t cost as much as The Beatles, should it?But my more in-depth question– by “Reincarnating Theordore” do you mean someone else doing his act now that he’s dead?
Your chronology is off. Theodorecharged $5 in the 70’s, $8 in the 80’s, and $10-12.50 15 years ago.By any measure $15 in 2007 is actually a bargain.And to your question, yes this actor is doing Theodore’s act.
